Combustion Instabilities

Details

  • Gas turbine industry is eager to develop new combustion technologies to meet up with the government regulations on emissions
  • Lean combustion systems – provide high efficiency and low emissions
  • Lean combustion give rise to instabilities
  • Instabilities can cause damage to the engines and sometimes catastrophic failure
  • Experimental facility will help to understand high pressure combustion phenomena
  • Very few high pressure experimental facilities have been build up but no experimental data has been published

Research Purpose

  • Design, manufacture and test reward step facing combustor operated on warm, moist, pressurized gas to simulate gas turbine conditions
  • Reward step combustor geometry can be considered as close approximation to the gas turbine combustor
  • Combustor geometry has an important role in the development of instabilities (Both the premixer and combustor length can be varied in the experiment)
  • Rearward step combustor has been tested at 1 bar in Massachusetts Institute of Technology University
  • The current research will focus on understanding and determining the parameters which causes instabilities in practical combustion systems that operate at elevated pressures and temperatures
  • Experimental data will be compared with theoretical models and simulated gas turbine systems and will be used as a benchmark to develop minimal instability combustors
